Clive Chajet

As leader of Chajet Consultancy, Clive provides branding and strategic communications services, as well as traditional corporate identity services, to leading American corporations. His most lasting contribution to the identity profession, however, may have been the preservation and restoration of the great Lippincott brand.

After early work with an advertising agency, a packaging manufacturer and a package design firm Clive partnered with advertising legend George Lois to form Lois/Chajet Design Group, which specialized in both packaging design and brand and corporate identity. When in due course George Lois' other commitments required his withdrawal, Clive continued the business as Chajet Design Group.

Then in 1983, he acquired Lippincott & Margulies - the pioneering firm in corporate identity, but which had then become quite small - and was lucky enough to have as his teacher and mentor Walter Margulies, who is generally credited with establishing corporate and brand identity as a professional specialization.

Clive learned quickly, rebuilt Lippincott & Margulies and in the next 6 years grew it substantially, restoring it to a leadership position. He then sold the firm to Marsh & McLennan and for another 5 years continued to grow it, retiring to private practice in 1994.

Chajet is a warmly welcomed speaker at branding conferences, and is also the author of the useful classic Image By Design whose second edition, he is pleased to report, still sells well. The Forum welcomes his perspective.  Tony Spaeth
